IMPORTANT: Fire Safety at Home

Dear PS 101 Families,

As you may know, yesterday NYC suffered one of the worst fires in recent NYC history in the Bronx. While our hearts and prayers go out to those families who lost loved ones and those effected by the fire, it would be foolish of us not to learn some valuable lessons to prevent future situations from occurring in our community.

Some of the basic things you can do at home and with your children are:

  1. Ensure your Smoke Alarms are working and operational. Push the button on it to test it and to ensure your child knows the sound it would make in case of a fire.
  2. Review exiting procedures with your child– how do they get out of the home or apartment?
  3. Discuss multiple exits. What if the main entrance is blocked by fire? How should they get out?
  4. Use the door knob to test if there is fire on the other side of the door. If a door knob is hot, there may be fire on the other side of that door. try another exit.
  5. Get as close to the floor as possible. Remind children that breathing smoke can be very dangerous and they are to get as close to the floor as possible when exiting (and if possible cover their mouth and nose with a wet rag/towel).
  6. In the event of a fire and they exit the building or home and you are not there, where are they supposed to go? Create a designated meeting place for your family.
  7. Always close the door when you leave so the first is contained and does not spread.

The FDNY has fire safety resources for families available at www.FDNYSmart.org, and remember to Close the Door when evacuating from a fire (also available in multiple languages).
