Fundraiser – Pennies for Patients

Pennies for Patients – Little Lighthouse Team

Dear PS 101 Families:

As we prepare our Service to Schools end-of-year project, we are excited to share our most productive and important fundraiser with the PS 101 community. The funds collected will benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Everyone who participates is a winner! Students, just like us across the country are collecting pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters during the Pennies for Patients campaign benefiting those who need it most. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Pennies for Patients program will enable students to collect their pennies and donate them to patients suffering from diseases and support the mission for a cure! Through this schoolwide service learning project, your child will learn about leadership, humanitarian efforts and will inspire and change people’s lives. Pennies for Patients is as simple as collecting spare or loose change, coins around the house or from your own piggy bank to donate to this important cause. Top classes on each grade will be awarded with a complimentary pizza party as a special reward. Please join our crusade and encourage your child to bring in Pennies for Patients and to donate to this wonderful cause.

Testing Dates – Upper Grades

Testing Dates for grades 3, 4, 5

February 13, 2020

Dear PS 101 Upper Grade Parents/Guardians,

As we prepare to enter into testing season, I wanted to remind you of important dates with New York State (NYS) standardized testing: The Grades 3-5 NYS ELA exam will take place over two days from March 25th – March 26th. Make-up days will immediately follow.

The Grades 3-5 NYS Math exam will take place over two days from April 22nd – April 23rd.  Make-up days will immediately follow.

The Grade 4 NYS Science performance exam with hands-on lab work/experiments window opens on May 18th. The written part of the NYS Science is scheduled for Monday, June 1st.

Please ensure your child is present on testing days, unless they are sick. If they wear eyeglasses, please ensure they have them for the start of the day.

Upper grade teachers will be preparing students with a variety of test preparation and review sheets in the coming days/weeks leading up to the exams. The state exams can be challenging and we want our students to be as prepared and comfortable as possible for the big day(s). Additionally, you may notice an uptick in homework assignments or different tasks/classwork activities during this time period. This is by design and implemented to provide our students with exposure, instructional practice and to build stamina they will need to shine. Please encourage your child to do their best and work hard every day as you are your child’s first teacher.

Kindly, support your child to use access their iReady accounts with ELA and Math practice for a minimum of 45 minutes per week in each subject. We are providing also providing optimal learning opportunities to use iReady in-class as well.

Thank you in advance for your support and cooperation. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to speak with your child’s teacher or contact our Parent Coordinator, Ms. Margaret Lloyd at 1-347-563-4680.

Dear Friends and Families of PS 101,

This past week, in honor of Respect for All week, our school community participated in a door decorating contest. Each teacher worked together with their class to decorate their door based on a children’s book and accompanying positive character trait. Our doors and halls have literally been transformed and now we’re ready to share them with all of you. Please take your time to carefully view each door and vote for your favorite. The last day for voting is February 23, 2020. Happy Respect for All week!

Parent Surveys

PS 101

“Parents Make the Grade!”

February 12, 2020

Dear Parents/Guardian:

You can help raise PS 101’s school grade on the Progress Report by completing and returning the Parent Survey that will be given to your child in a green envelope today. This is your opportunity to tell the Department of Education how much you love all the wonderful things PS 101 does to support your child’s education and prepare them for the future.

The results are important to P.S 101’s overall success. We have an excellent return rate of surveys every year, but this year we would like to set a goal of 95% or higher in each classroom. Please take a few moments to thoroughly read each question so that the survey accurately reflects your opinion of our school. For example, whenever a parent “Strongly Agrees” with a statement our school receives 10 points for that answer but we only receive 6.6 points for an answer of “Agree’s”. All the points are added to receive the school’s average score.

Please have your child return the survey to their classroom teacher as soon as possible or kindly complete the survey on-line. Parent surveys must be completed and returned /submitted by March 31, 2020. If you love something we do, show it on the survey. The higher the grades you give, the higher our school grade can go!

Once you have completed this exciting task, your child will be rewarded with a FREE Full-Day NO homework PASS. Classes who have 100% completion will be awarded with the following reward:

  • 1st Class on the grade with full participation of returned surveys – PIZZA PARTY
  • 2nd Class on the grade with full participation of returned surveys – ICECREAM PARTY
  • 3rd Class on the grade with full participation of returned surveys – POPCORN PARTY

Again, your returning your survey praising PS 101 will directly raise our school grade. Let’s show why PS 101 is so wonderful! Thank you for supporting our school.

Please indicate how you will complete your child’s survey and return the slip to your child’s classroom teacher so we can reward your child with their HW Pass and class tally for party prizes.

I Am Pennies – Respect for All Parent Letter

I Am Pennies Respect

Dear PS 101 Families:

As a fundraiser for Pennies for Patients and a part of Respect For All, we are collecting $1 per student if they wish to be included on our “I AM” wall in the auditorium. Students will be given a template that says “I am ______” and they can choose to fill in the blank however they wish — something that represents them or how they identify. They will also be able to decorate this as they wish. For example, “I am an artist,” “I am Muslim,” “I am Chinese,” “I am a boy,” “I am a gamer,” “I am kind,” “I am a math genius,” “I am brave,” etc.

Photos will be taken on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday during morning line up (7:40-8:10AM) in the auditorium.

Photos will be posted throughout the week and will stay up for the remainder of the school year. Students will get their photo returned to them in June.

This is a great opportunity for students to express who they are with pride and without judgment while raising money for a great cause!

We hope to have all our students participate in this endeavor!

Please enclose the dollar donation in a sealed envelope labeled with your child’s full name and class.

With gratitude,

Ms. Kipriadis, Ms. Bova, and the Little Lighthouse and Diversity Teams
