Schoolyard Safety

Dear PS 101 Families:

Although the school playground is part of our public-school property, it becomes a shared community space after school hours, and we rely on all families to help maintain a safe and respectful environment for everyone:

  • Ensuring children use equipment safely and appropriately.
  • Safety is a shared responsibility.
  • We encourage all families to remain vigilant and to actively supervise their children during outdoor play.
  • Keeping an eye on younger siblings.
  • Encouraging kind and respectful behavior toward others with children and adults.

Students’ Emergency Contact Information

Dear PS 101 Parents/Guardians:

For the safety of our students and our school communities, it’s important that New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) and school staff are able to contact a trusted guardian in the event there is an emergency at the school or concerning a student in attendance.

Please be sure that PS 101 has the current address and contact information of a trusted adult who can come to school to retrieve your child in the event of an emergency.

You can update your student’s emergency contact and health information online through your New York City Schools Account (NYCSA) at schoolsaccount.nyc. You may also provide this information via the blue emergency contact card which can be retrieved at PS 101, if preferred.

Thank you as always for your partnership.

Sincerely,

Gregg Korrol

HIV/AIDS Educational Lessons

Dear PS 101 Parents/Guardians:

HIV and AIDS are among the most serious health problems Americans have ever faced. Advances in medicine now allow people with HIV to live long and healthy lives, but there is still no cure. Health education plays a critical role in helping students learn to make healthy choices and to protect themselves and others.

The New York State Education Department and New York City Public Schools require that HIV education be taught annually to all students in kindergarten through grade 12, as part of a comprehensive health education. This year, your child will have the opportunity to learn from a new curriculum, called Growing Up and Staying Safe, that is medically accurate, inclusive, age-appropriate, and developed in partnership with national experts, local community leaders, parents/caregivers, and educators.

In the elementary grades, students learn how to stay healthy and avoid illnesses, develop self-worth and respect for their bodies, advocate for kindness and empathy, and communicate with trusted adults. Please review the following grade level overview(s) to learn more about the lessons: K-5 Parent Overview.

We respect your role as parents/guardians in teaching your child about healthy behaviors that support your family’s beliefs and values. We encourage you to discuss with your child what they are learning in health class and share your beliefs and values with them.

Parents, guardians, and schools share a common goal: we want students of all ages to be healthy in all aspects of their lives. We encourage you to speak to your child’s teacher, parent coordinator, or me if you’d like to learn more about the curriculum. Our teacher teams will be executing the required lessons during the week of Monday, December 2nd – Friday, December 6th.

If you have any questions, please speak with your child’s classroom teacher or feel free to contact our Parent Coordinator, Ms. Bing Xing Lin at 347-563-4680 or via email at BLin9@schools.nyc.gov.

Sincerely,

Gregg Korrol

Save For College Program (opt-out process)

Dear PS 101 Families (Grades K-3),

As of the 2024–25 school year, all NYC Public School kindergarten, first, second and third grade students are automatically enrolled in the Save for College Program and receive an initial allocation of $100 in an NYC Scholarship Account. For more information, read the Save for College Program Intro Document.

Parents/guardians have the opportunity to opt out of receiving an NYC Scholarship Account. The opt-out date may differ between students and is based on when the student was enrolled in school.

The initial opt-out period will take place November 4 – December 4 for the 2024-25 school year, and applies to all kindergarten students and any first, second or third grade students who enrolled in your school in late spring 2024. If a family opts out, they will not receive an NYC Scholarship Account, they will not receive the initial $100 allocation, and their student’s data will not be shared with NYC Kids RISE and the technology vendor VistaShare.

Parents/guardians who want to participate in the Program simply take NO ACTION during the Opt-out Period.

During their 30-day opt-out period, parents/guardians who wish to change their child’s participation status by opting-out have two options:

  1. Parents/guardians can change their child’s participation status within the NYC Schools Account(Open external link) (NYCSA). This is the recommended way for parents to opt out, re-enroll or cancel. After logging in to NYCSA, the parent/guardian should look at the main screen with all of the tiles. The parent/guardian can click on the “Forms” tile, then click on the “view” button on the next page near “NYC Kids RISE Save for College Program.” After this they can review program information and will have relevant options available towards the bottom of the page.
  2. Parents/guardians can return a signed opt-out form to their child’s school for data entry into ATS within a defined 30-day period. The deadline will be printed on the opt-out notice and form. See below for more details.
