Black History Month

Dear PS 101 Families:

Each February, Americans across the United States commemorate Black History Month, a month-long national celebration of the contributions and achievements that Black men and women have made throughout U.S. and world history.

Black History Month serves as an inclusive month-long call to action for all Americans to remember, discover, understand, and honor the key contributions that Black men and women have made to our country, our society, and to the world. In celebrating Black History Month, it is important that we recognize the adversity and impact of generational trauma, suffered by African Americans, due to our country’s history of slavery, racism, and inequality.

The power of self-care, healing, and building community couldn’t be more meaningful than right now. We will also be covering some of these important lessons and activities in class to ensure discovery learning and equity for all.

Please visit NYC DOE’s Resource page for resources to celebrate Black History Month: https://www.schools.nyc.gov/learning/subjects/social-studies/celebrate-black-history-month.

Student Attendance

Dear PS 101 Families,

As we move into the colder and snowier months, we have noticed an increase in student lateness. We understand that winter weather can make mornings more challenging; however, arriving to school on time is essential for your child’s success. Instruction begins promptly at 8:00 a.m., and students who arrive after that time immediately miss valuable learning opportunities, morning routines, and important community-building activities that set the tone for the day. Establishing consistent, punctual attendance helps students feel prepared, confident, and ready to engage in their learning.

We strongly encourage families to plan for arrival between 7:40 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. Students who arrive early can take advantage of our free breakfast program and ease into their day in a calm, supportive environment. On days when weather conditions may slow traffic or create delays, please consider leaving home a few minutes earlier to ensure your child arrives on time. Your partnership makes a meaningful difference, and we appreciate your continued support in helping our students start each day ready to learn.
