NYCDOE HIV/AIDS Curriculum

Dear PS101 Families,

HIV and AIDS are among the most serious health problems Americans have ever faced. Advances in medicine now allow people with HIV to live long and healthy lives, but there is still no cure. Health education plays a critical role in helping students learn to make healthy choices and to protect themselves and others.

The New York State Education Department and New York City Public Schools require that HIV education be taught annually to all students in kindergarten through grade 12, as part of comprehensive health education. This year, your child will have the opportunity to learn from a new curriculum, called Growing Up and Staying Safe, that is medically accurate, inclusive, age-appropriate, and developed in partnership with national experts, local community leaders, parents/caregivers, and educators. Please be advised this is a mandated curriculum for all students.

In the elementary grades, students learn how to stay healthy and avoid illnesses, develop self-worth and respect for their bodies, advocate for kindness and empathy, and communicate with trusted adults. Please review the included grade level overview(s)

 K-5 Parent Overview to learn more about the lessons. We respect your role as parents/guardians in teaching your child about healthy behaviors that support your family’s beliefs and values. We encourage you to discuss with your child what they are learning in health class and share your beliefs and values with them.

Parents, guardians, and schools share a common goal: we want students of all ages to be healthy in all aspects of their lives. Kids Rise – Save for College

Dear Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2 Families:

School is an academic milestone, one of the many in your child’s journey! We want to remind you that your child has funds available for their educational future through the Save for College Program.

Your child’s NYC Scholarship Account has an initial allocation of $100, unless your family chooses not to participate by “opting-out.” 

You can increase these funds with an additional $25 reward for activating and viewing their account. You can view a step-by-step guide and a video to learn how to activate your child’s account, known as Building Block 1: https://nyckidsrise.org/get-started/activate-account/

You can view the Introductory Video, Program Basics, and Program FAQ for more information.

Once you activate your account, you can log in regularly and see how the balance changes over time. Take this important step so that we can all work together to save for your child’s future!

Student Privacy Annual Notices to Families

Dear PS101 Families,

The DOE takes the confidentiality of information about students very seriously. There are several federal and state laws, such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and New York State Education Law 2-d, and local regulations, such as Chancellor’s Regulation A-820, that protect students’ “personally identifiable information” (PII). These laws also place responsibilities on the DOE and outside parties that are given access to children’s PII, including the requirement for the DOE and schools to provide families with the following annual notices:

Microsoft Software for Students and Families

Dear PS101 Families,

The DOE provides free Microsoft software to students and families. Much of this software has education-specific content that supports our students’ academic improvement. In addition, familiarity with these tools will help prepare students for college and careers. 

  • Students can go to https://portal.office.com, sign in with their DOE credentials, and click on the Install Office button to install the software.

STARTS TODAY: Complete Your Family Income Inquiry Form Online

Dear PS 101 Families:

The Family Income Inquiry form for the 2023–2024 school year opens today and families have two ways to complete it online:

  1. By using your child’s 9-digit ID (OSIS) number, submit the online form at myschoolapps.com.
  2. Access the Family Income Inquiry Form in the Student Documents section of your NYC Student Account portal: at NYC Schools Account NYSCA

The Family Income Inquiry form is the basis for determining your school’s eligibility for Title I funding. By submitting this form, you can help ensure that funding for our school is properly calculated for student resources.

Kindergarten and 1st Grade Parents: Save for College Program Opt-Out Process

Dear PS 101 Families,

As previously shared, every kindergarten and new grade 1 student is eligible to join the NYC Kids RISE Save for College Program in the 2022–23 school year, with kindergarten and newly-enrolled grade 1 families each receiving an initial $100 allocation within an NYC Scholarship Account. Families have 30 days to opt out if they do not want to be included in the program and have their student’s data shared with NYC Kids RISE and their technology vendor, VistaShare. To support this process, please review the following information and take appropriate action:   

Note that parents/guardians who wish to opt-out have two options: 

  • Opt out within their NYC Schools Account; or  
  • Return a signed opt-out form to their child’s school for data entry into ATS by November 30.  

Kindergarten and newly-enrolled grade 1 students who enroll after November 1 will still have the opportunity to receive an NYC Scholarship Account.

Save for College Program Information

Dear Grade 1 Families:

Please remember to complete Building Block 1 for NYC Kids RISE Save for College Program!
