Reminder: End Dates for PS 101 Afterschool Programs

Greetings PS 101 Families:

As a reminder, please see below for the upcoming afterschool program end dates. Kindly note, there is a new end date for our Thursday Book Club program.

  • The Tuesday through Thursday Afterschool Programs (Grades 2-5 Test Prep/Homework Help, ENL Test Prep, ENL Newcomers and Mandarin) – Last day is Wednesday, May 6th.
  • Shifting the last day for the Afterschool Book Club Program to: Last Day on Thursday, April 30th.
  • As a reminder, the citywide PTC is scheduled for Thursday, May 7th.
  • The BRASS Band Afterschool Program concludes on Friday, May 8th.
  • The STRINGS Band Afterschool Program will conclude on Wednesday, May 20th. The STRINGS Band will be performing at the Drama Show on Thursday, May 21st.
  • The Tuesday through Thursday Drama Club Afterschool Program (Grades 4-5) – Last day is Wednesday, May 20th. The Drama Show is scheduled for Thursday, May 21st!

Reminder: LLT Caring Hearts Bake Sale

Dear PS 101 Families:

Our Little Lighthouse Team (LLT) is excited to host a Caring Hearts Bake Sale Fundraiser on Wednesday, April 29th, in support of the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association is an organization dedicated to advancing heart health through research, education, and advocacy.

All proceeds from this fundraiser will go directly toward supporting this important cause.

If your family would like to contribute baked goods, please ensure that all items are:

  • Nut-free.
  • Individually wrapped for easy distribution.

Donations may be brought in on the morning of Wednesday, April 29th.

The bake sale will take place during all lunch periods. We encourage students to participate by:

  • Bringing in donations.
  • Bringing spending money to purchase treats and support the fundraiser.

Through this effort, our students are learning the importance of leadership, compassion, and giving back to others.

Important Message: Online Safety at PS 101

Dear Families,

We want to make sure all our students feel safe and happy. Recently, we have noticed some unkind behavior happening on social media and in online games like TikTok and Roblox. Even though this happens outside of school, it can still hurt our students’ feelings.

Why Age Matters

Most apps like Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok are for people 13 years or older. Our students are younger than 13, so these apps are not made for them. These sites can sometimes show things that are not safe for children.

Staying Safe in Games

Games like Roblox are fun, but the “chat” feature can be risky. Children might talk to strangers or hear unkind words. These chats are not always watched by the people who make the games.

How You Can Help

We suggest these simple steps to keep your child safe:

  • Check Their Apps: Talk to your child about what games they play and who they are talking to.
  • Use Privacy Settings: Make sure your child’s accounts are “Private.” In games like Roblox, you can turn off the chat feature entirely.
  • Report Problems: Teach your child to tell an adult if they see something mean or inappropriate. Use the “Report” button on the app to let the company know what happened.
  • Set Time Limits: Make sure children have plenty of time for offline play and rest.

Working Together

If something happens online that makes your child feel unsafe at school, please tell us. However, for most problems on apps or games outside of school, it is best to report it directly to the app company.

Science Scoop – April 2026

Dear PS 101 Families:

As we move into the spring season, scientific curiosity continues to bloom across our classrooms! We are excited to share the April edition of the Science Scoop, highlighting the engaging investigations and discoveries taking place throughout PS 101.

In this month’s issue, you’ll find:

  • A spotlight on our Scientist of the Month
  • A fun science fact to spark conversation at home
  • A glimpse into the hands-on learning and investigations happening across grade levels

From observing and experimenting to questioning and making real-world connections, our students are continuing to develop the skills and curiosity that help them think like scientists each and every day in our science cluster labs with Ms. Warner and Mr. Lee.

Climate Action Day: Health, Wellness, & Green Space

Dear PS 101 Families,

Today, Wednesday, April 22nd, schools across New York City, including PS 101, will participate in our next Sustainability Climate Action Day of the year!

This citywide initiative encourages students to learn about and take action toward protecting our planet. Our focus for this Climate Action Day is Health, Wellness + Green Space, exploring how our environment affects our well-being and how caring for green spaces helps support a healthier community.

Throughout the day, students will engage in lessons and activities centered on wellness and environmental care, including:

  • Learning how green spaces support physical and mental health
  • Exploring ways we can care for plants, gardens, and natural spaces
  • Understanding the connection between clean air, movement, and healthy habitat
  • Brainstorming classroom and home habits that promote wellness for ourselves and the earth

Together, PS 101 is helping students make meaningful connections between personal health and the health of our planet.

Thank you for supporting these efforts at home by encouraging conversations with your child about spending time outdoors, caring for plants, and making daily choices that support overall well-being.

Let’s continue to make PS 101 a model for sustainability and care for our planet!

PS 101 Drama Show: Heroes Academy

Dear PS 101 Families:

SAVE THE DATE FOR OUR DRAMA SHOW AND PURCHASE YOUR TICKETS NOW!

It is with great pleasure that we announce the return of our PS 101 Drama Show on Thursday, May 21st at 6:30 PM sharp.

  • Doors open at 6:00 PM. Please join us in the audience to cheer on the PS 101 cast in their performance of Heroes Academy!
  • We look forward to this opportunity to celebrate our students’ hard work in theater arts- singing, dancing, and acting!
  • Tickets will be sold on a first come, first served basis. TICKET SALES WILL BE OPEN AFTER Monday, May 4th.
  • Get ready before they are sold out!  Tickets will be sold for $5 each! All ticket sales proceeds go towards supporting our PS 101 Drama Club- costumes, set designs, props, refreshments, etc.

Here’s how you can purchase a ticket:

Parent letters will be sent home with your child on May 4th with a return slip for you to fill out how many tickets you want to purchase. Please check your child’s folders for the letter.
Return the slip with tickets payment (enclosed in a sealed envelope with your child’s name and class) to your child’s teacher.
Purchased tickets will then be sent home with your child on the day prior to the drama show date.
All performers in our Drama/Dance/STRINGS BAND Show will be provided with one FREE ticket to the performance.
Kindly note, if you purchase a ticket for school-age children, they must be accompanied by an adult for admittance.
There is no guarantee that tickets will be sold at the door. If we are sold out with pre-ticket sales and reach maximum seating, tickets will not be sold at the door.
A food concession stand will be open with an assortment of snacks and drinks.

Reminder: PS 101 Crayon Initiative

Dear PS 101 Families,

To commemorate Earth Day on April 22, PS 101 is proud to participate in a meaningful initiative that supports both our environment and children in need.

Through the Crayon Initiative, used crayons are collected, recycled, and remanufactured into new, durable crayons that are donated to children in hospitals across the country. These redesigned crayons are larger, easy to grip, and designed not to roll, bringing comfort, creativity, and joy to young patients.

We invite our PS 101 community to join us in this effort by donating any used or unwanted crayons from home. Instead of throwing them away, let’s give them a second life!

Collection Details:

  • Drop-off boxes in the main entrance
  • Students may bring in crayons and deposit them throughout the collection period

Together, we can help reduce waste, protect our planet, and brighten the days of children in hospitals.
