PS 101 Grade Tags

Dear PS 101 Families,

To support a smooth and safe arrival each morning, we will be implementing a colored tag system for all students. Each grade will be assigned a specific color tag that will be attached to your child’s bookbag. The tag will make things easier for our staff to help guide students to their designated grade-level line-up areas and to watch for students in the incorrect arrival location.

Important Reminders for Families:

  • Please ensure your child’s tag remains on their bookbag at all times.
  • Do not remove, replace, or decorate the tag, as it is an important safety and organizational tool.
  • If a tag becomes damaged or lost, please notify your child’s teacher so we can provide a replacement.

We appreciate your cooperation in helping us create a safe, efficient, and positive start to each school day.

Afterschool Programs

Greetings PS 101 Families,

Each year, PS 101 creates limited after-school programs which have different areas of focus based on academic need. While all students can use some degree of additional support, there are many students in our school who do not have any additional support (such as a Special Ed service, ESL service, etc.) and do need additional help.

Our first round of after-school academic programs starting in late September are for teacher-selected students in grades 2-5 and based on a specific academic criterion (mid-level 2 students to low level 3 students who do not get additional support and need it). Students are chosen based on a grade criterion (listed above) and if they will benefit from additional instructional time. As the year continues, we will potentially create other after-school or before school programs that target different instructional needs and/or groups of students.

Additionally, the following programs are planned:

  • For parents, we have an adult Saturday English Language Learner Program at PS 101 and you can contact our Parent Coordinator Bing at 347-563-4680 or via email BLin9@schools.nyc.gov for more information about these classes.
  • We also are planning our Together Time Parent-Child workshops on Saturdays which will begin in November.
  • Grades 2-5 will have the opportunity to join our yoga after-school club, scheduled for January.

As a reminder, if you are not part of this round of after-school and want additional support, you have FREE access to online tutoring through iReady which tailors’ instruction to your child’s specific needs and gives direct feedback.

Welcome Back to School Night at PS 101!

Dear PS 101 Families:

We are thrilled to welcome you to Back to School Night at PS 101 on Tuesday, September 16th, taking place in your child’s classroom! To best accommodate family schedules, classroom teachers will host three identical in-person presentations at the following times.
You may attend any of the three sessions that works best for you:

  • 4:30 PM
  • 5:30 PM
  • 6:30 PM

Please be advised:
*PS101 Main Doors open at 5min to the start of the session (4:25pm/5:25pm/6:25pm)
*Teachers begin their presentation approximately 10min after (4:40pm/5:40pm/6:40pm) which allows parents time to find the classroom
*Main Doors will close 20min after the start of each session (4:50pm/5:50pm/6:50pm).
If you arrive after doors closed you will wait for the next session to begin.

Information Sessions:

  • Classroom routines and behavior expectations
  • Parent + teacher communication and partnership
  • Operational procedures (field trips, absence notes)
  • Curriculum and instruction highlights, including Into Reading/IReady/Envisions/My World/Amplify, Leader In Me and standardized test preparation.
  • Homework guidelines and assessment practices
  • A brief Q&A to close each session

Our Cluster Specialty Teachers (Dance, Science, LEGO Robotics, Physical Education, STEM, Visual Arts/Graphic Design, Library, and Music) as well as ESL personnel will also present in person at 4:30 PM, 5:30 PM, and 6:30 PM.

Related Services Virtual Sessions:

Our Related Service Providers, including Speech and Language Therapists, School Psychologists, Social Workers, and Guidance Counselors, will host virtual presentations at the same time slots: 4:30 PM, 5:30 PM, and 6:30 PM.

PS 101 School and Schoolyard Important Safety Reminders

Dear PS 101 Families,

Please be advised of the following safety practices in and outside of the school building. Safety is a shared responsibility amongst our community and by practicing these safety protocols, you can help us maintain a safe and respectful environment for students and everyone in our school community.

School and Schoolyard Rules:

  • We love animals, but for safety reasons dogs and other pets are not allowed in the school building, schoolyard and dismissal areas. While you absolutely love your pets, please be reminded that some children and adults get scared.
  • Do not use electric scooters or e-bikes in the schoolyard or on the school ramps.
  • Scooters and bicycles are not permitted for use in the schoolyard before 3:00 pm which ensures a safe and orderly dismissal.
  • Students are not permitted to play ball in the school yard during dismissal. After everyone dismisses at 3:00 pm, students may use the park with parent supervision.
  • Do not bring glass containers onto school grounds. Glass containers of any kind pose as a risk, and we will discard any of these items if observed in the classroom. Please ensure only plastic containers, bottles, or jars are used for all purposes.
  • When using the schoolyard during afterschool hours, you must remain vigilant and supervise your children during outdoor play. Do not leave your children unattended, especially younger, non-school age children.
  • Smoking is not allowed in the schoolyard or around the school building as per NYS Law.
  • Encourage kind and respectful behavior toward others with children and adults.

Emergency Preparedness

Greetings PS101 Families,

Safety is always our top priority in PS 101.

All NYC schools are required to hold several safety drills throughout the school year. The two drills that are most common are Evacuation Drills (formerly known as a Fire drill) and Lockdown Drills.

You can learn more about these drills here

Our first Evacuation Drill will be held today, with 1-2 per week each week through September into early October (totaling 6 drills as per requirement). We will also hold a Lockdown drill in October.

Everything I need to know for the Start of School

What is the first day of school?
Thursday September 4, 2025
*Kindergarten and Pre-K have different schedules on the first day- please check the email you received

What are the school hours?
Breakfast Hours: 7:40am- 8:00am (Breakfast Menu)
Daily School Hours: 8:00am- 2:05pm-2:15pm (depending on the grade)

Where do I drop off my child for school and where do I pick them up?
All children enter the school through the main entrance on 24th Avenue.

Can I meet the Principal?
Yes, Principal Korrol holds weekly meetings with parents called Coffee with Korrol.

What supplies do I need for the start of school?

When can I drop off my child’s school supplies?
Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st Grade and 2nd Grade: August 28th (Thursday)
Grade 3, Grade 4 and Grade 5: August 29th (Friday)
Last Call- All Grades: September 2nd (Tuesday)

What does my child eat for lunch?

*Please send your child to school with a healthy snack and water for snack time

Does my child need certain immunizations/vaccines to attend school?
Yes! There are specific immunizations your child must have or they will not be allowed to attend school.

What if my child gets sick or has medical needs?
PS101 has a nurse on site to assist your child if needed. If your child has a specific health issue such as asthma and uses an inhaler, or other medical conditions, please speak to the nurse so she can guide you on next steps.
If your child has a fever they are not permitted in school.
Your child must be 24 hours fever free without medication to return and should have a doctor’s note.

Coffee with Korrol Principal Meeting

Dear PS101 Families,

We are happy to announce the Coffee with Principal Korrol meetings for this coming school year.

At these meetings, Principal Korrol meets with parents from a specific grade to get to know you better, to inform you about PS101, to discuss expectations for the school year, offer parenting strategies to help your child be successful (and to make you an even more amazing parent), and answer any questions you have.

Parents must register for the meeting below. Light breakfast will be served during the discussion.

Please arrive 10-15 minutes before the scheduled time so we can start promptly.

PS 101 Cell Phone Policy

As per NYS Law, students will not be permitted to use or access their personal internet-enabled electronic devices upon arrival at school until the end of the school day. The school day is defined as the period from the moment students enter the school building until the last class of the day ends, including during lunch. The school day starts at 7:40am and ends at 2:20pm.  Students will be able to use school/NYCPS-issued devices during the school day.

  1. COLLECTION/STORAGE 
  • Upon arrival, students must power off their devices.
    • Students will place their devices in personal school assigned pouches and secure it in front of school staff.
    • Students will store their locked pouches in their book bags which are stored in classroom closets for the day.
  • At the end of the school day, students will unlock their pouch upon dismissal .
  • They will remove their device(s) and lock their pouches before leaving the school.
  • Students with approved early dismissal will be able to unlock their pouch in upon exiting the school.
  • In the event that a storage device, such as a pouch, is lost or damaged, the school will require a nominal fee for a replacement (similar to replacement charges for school IDs).
  1. EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS
  • In case of emergency or exigent circumstances, parents or guardians can call the main office at 718 372-0221 to reach their child.
  • In case of emergency or exigent circumstances, students may access phones to reach their parents or guardians.
  • In case of emergency or exigent circumstances, the school will use Remind and GAMA to communicate information to parents or guardians.
  1. EXCEPTIONS
  • Students are allowed to use their device if they have an individualized education program (IEP) or 504 Plan that includes use of an internet-enabled device and do not have a DOE-issued device for such purpose.
  • Parents/guardians must contact AP Kane at 718-372-0221 if a student requires an exception for reasons such as: medical monitoring/treatment s (for example to monitor blood sugar or other similar circumstances), if student is a caregiver, for approved language purposes (such as translation or interpretation services if no other means are available), or where otherwise required by law.
  • The principal/designee may authorize use for an educational purpose.  
  • Exceptions will be processed and approved within 48hrs
  1. DISCIPLINE 
  • Students who use electronic devices in violation of the NYCPS Discipline Code, the school’s policy, Chancellor’s Regulation A-413, and/or the NYCPS Internet Acceptable Use and Safety Policy (“IAUSP”) will be subject to progressive discipline. This means that the disciplinary responses will escalate based on the nature and frequency of the violation. As provided in the State law, a student may not be suspended solely on the grounds that the student accessed a personal internet-enabled device in violation of school policy​.​ ​ Repeated incidents of insubordination (i.e. refusal to surrender or store device) may result in a suspension if approved by the Office of Safety and Youth Development.
  1. OTHER: If lost or stolen
    In the unlikely event that an electronic device is stolen or damaged at school, parents can submit a claim to the Comptroller’s Office. More information on submitting a claim is available on the Comptroller’s webpage.
  2. EMERGENCIES: In an Emergency:
    In an emergency, we will contact families through GAMA, which is directly linked to your New York City Schools Account (NYCSA). All parents/guardians can access a step-by-step guide for setting up a NYCSA account at https://www.schools.nyc.gov/setup-guide. If you need support with setting up your account, please contact our Parent Coordinator, Bing at 718-372-0221.
