Schoolyard Safety
Dear PS 101 Parents/Guardians:
A gentle reminder to please refrain from using your electric scooters or e-bikes in the schoolyard, as this is a serious accident waiting to happen. Please work with me to ensure the safety for students, parents, and staff.
Additionally, please be advised, student scooters and bicycles use are not permitted in the schoolyard until after 3:00 PM to ensure a safe and orderly dismissal. Smoking and pets are NOT permitted as well.
I rely on your cooperation and partnership to ensure a safe school environment while in our schoolyard. School Safety will be patrolling the perimeter of the school building to help promote safe sidewalks and schoolyard.

Safer Access system- Doors Locked
Dear Families,
We have some important news to share regarding the safety measures at our school. In line with our commitment to enhance security practices, all NYC Public Schools will have a Safer Access system installed during the 2023-25 school years. PS 101 has already had our Safer Access System installed. The Safer Access system is designed to strengthen our existing safety and security practices as part of the overall visitor protocols at our school.
What is Safer Access?
The primary objective of the Safer Access system is to ensure that all doors remain locked outside of the morning-entry and afternoon-dismissal periods. When school doors are locked, visitors wishing to gain access to the building will ring the intercom at the main entrance door (or ADA-accessibility entrance if applicable) and identify themselves before access is granted into the school building. Safer Access allows our dedicated staff assigned to the main desk (School Safety Agents and/or school staff) to be able to see and speak with visitors before granting them access inside. Please be assured that all visitors to our school will continue to be treated with courtesy, professionalism, and respect while awaiting entry into our building. In addition to enhancing safety, this system allows for easy access for first responders during an emergency. NYCDOE HIV/AIDS Curriculum
Dear PS101 Families,
HIV and AIDS are among the most serious health problems Americans have ever faced. Advances in medicine now allow people with HIV to live long and healthy lives, but there is still no cure. Health education plays a critical role in helping students learn to make healthy choices and to protect themselves and others.
The New York State Education Department and New York City Public Schools require that HIV education be taught annually to all students in kindergarten through grade 12, as part of comprehensive health education. This year, your child will have the opportunity to learn from a new curriculum, called Growing Up and Staying Safe, that is medically accurate, inclusive, age-appropriate, and developed in partnership with national experts, local community leaders, parents/caregivers, and educators. Please be advised this is a mandated curriculum for all students.
In the elementary grades, students learn how to stay healthy and avoid illnesses, develop self-worth and respect for their bodies, advocate for kindness and empathy, and communicate with trusted adults. Please review the included grade level overview(s)
K-5 Parent Overview to learn more about the lessons. We respect your role as parents/guardians in teaching your child about healthy behaviors that support your family’s beliefs and values. We encourage you to discuss with your child what they are learning in health class and share your beliefs and values with them.
Parents, guardians, and schools share a common goal: we want students of all ages to be healthy in all aspects of their lives. Need Google Classroom or Student Account Help?
Dear PS 101 Families,
Tina Sum, our computer specialist, will be available during the hours of 8am – 9am everyday, until Friday, September, 22nd, to assist parents with any issues regarding Google Classroom and Student Accounts. If you are having technical issues accessing these sites, Ms. Sum will be available to assist you.

Student Privacy Annual Notices to Families
Dear PS101 Families,
The DOE takes the confidentiality of information about students very seriously. There are several federal and state laws, such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and New York State Education Law 2-d, and local regulations, such as Chancellor’s Regulation A-820, that protect students’ “personally identifiable information” (PII). These laws also place responsibilities on the DOE and outside parties that are given access to children’s PII, including the requirement for the DOE and schools to provide families with the following annual notices:
- Annual FERPA Notification (scroll to the bottom of the page for parent letter and translations); and
- Parent Bill of Rights for Data Privacy and Security.

Microsoft Software for Students and Families
Dear PS101 Families,
The DOE provides free Microsoft software to students and families. Much of this software has education-specific content that supports our students’ academic improvement. In addition, familiarity with these tools will help prepare students for college and careers.
- Students can go to https://portal.office.com, sign in with their DOE credentials, and click on the Install Office button to install the software.

Required Immunization and Health Forms
Dear PS 101 Families,
Please review the following information and take appropriate action:
- New York State Public Health Law requires students to get certain vaccines to attend school. All students should have received all required immunizations.
- Please review this updated immunization requirements letter (includes translations under “Immunization Chart for Families”) .
- Please review your child’s immunization history with your healthcare providers, so that they may be up-to-date for the start of the school year.
- In accordance with Chancellor’s Regulation A-701, all students entering DOE public schools for the first time, from kindergarten through grade 12, must submit a New Admission Examination form (CH-205)–completed by a health care provider–to their school nurse as soon as possible after registration.
- Any students needing to take medications or receive any medical treatments must submit a Medication Administration Form (MAF) and/or Medically Prescribed Treatment Form (scroll down on the page) every year. For more information on health services in school, visit the Health Services page.

Kindergarten and 1st Grade Parents: Save for College Program Opt-Out Process
Dear PS 101 Families,
As previously shared, every kindergarten and new grade 1 student is eligible to join the NYC Kids RISE Save for College Program in the 2022–23 school year, with kindergarten and newly-enrolled grade 1 families each receiving an initial $100 allocation within an NYC Scholarship Account. Families have 30 days to opt out if they do not want to be included in the program and have their student’s data shared with NYC Kids RISE and their technology vendor, VistaShare. To support this process, please review the following information and take appropriate action:

Note that parents/guardians who wish to opt-out have two options:
- Opt out within their NYC Schools Account; or
- Return a signed opt-out form to their child’s school for data entry into ATS by November 30.
Kindergarten and newly-enrolled grade 1 students who enroll after November 1 will still have the opportunity to receive an NYC Scholarship Account.

Have you completed and submitted your child’s Emergency Contact Form?
Dear PS 101 Families:
REMINDER! If you have not yet completed and submitted your child’s emergency contact form, please do immediately. You will find the grade link to the google form in your child’s REMIND message or Google Classroom today. You will have to sign-in using your child’s Google Classroom/DOE Student Email account. If you have more than one child, you must go log into each child’s individual account to complete the form.
To ensure current contact information for school staff to reach you, please complete and submit the google form immediately.
If you have any issues regarding this matter, please inform your child’s teacher or call the general office at 718-372-0221.
